First, let’s talk about the big department stores. Think Selfridges, John Lewis, and Macy’s (if you’re in the US). They almost always open their doors on Boxing Day, and they hit the ground running with massive sales. You know the ones—where a coat you eyed for weeks is suddenly half price? That’s your moment.
But it’s not just the glamour stores. Large chains like Target, Walmart, and Tesco (in the UK) typically operate on reduced hours. You can grab that forgotten gift, pick up batteries for that toy, or—more importantly—restock on snacks for the next wave of movie marathons. Pro tip: Check their websites the night before for exact hours; they love a last-minute change!
Don’t Forget the Little Guys and the Service Sector
What about your local coffee shop? Or the corner convenience store? Many smaller, independent businesses choose to open on Boxing Day. They often do it to be a lifeline for the community—and to catch a bit of the post-Christmas buzz. Imagine getting a fresh espresso while everyone else is slurping leftover tea. That’s a win.
And here’s a wild card: cinemas, bowling alleys, and escape rooms. Yes, them too! Boxing Day is prime time for families needing a group activity. So, while you’re looking up shops, don’t overlook entertainment venues. They’re often open and ready to save you from another viewing of Home Alone.

Let’s not forget the unsung heroes: pharmacies and petrol stations. They are almost always open, because life doesn’t stop for tinsel. Needing a painkiller or a full tank for a Boxing Day drive? They’ve got your back. That reliability is a silent gift we often forget to appreciate.
