Listen to the sound during boarding. A high-pitched whine? That’s a turbofan engine, typical on modern jets like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320. A deeper, throatier rumble? You’re on a wide-body like a Boeing 777 or Airbus A330.
If you hear a shrieking, almost dolphin-like noise at the gate, that’s the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) running. It’s a tiny jet engine in the tail. It powers the lights and air conditioning. It’s also obnoxious.
The Cabin Interior Tells All
Boeings usually have a rounded, vaulted ceiling with a single overhead bin that looks like a giant eyebrow. Airbuses often have a flatter, more rectangular ceiling and bins that open with a satisfying thump.
Look at the overhead bin handles. On Boeings, they’re often a lever you push up. On Airbuses, they’re a button you push in. It’s a tiny test for your spatial IQ.
