Here’s the secret sauce: SAE isn’t just for old professors in lab coats. They run incredible competitions for high school and college students. Ever heard of Formula SAE? It’s where students build tiny race cars and race them on actual tracks. Yes, they get grades for going fast. Some teams even build electric cars that buzz like angry bees—and they’re all judged by engineers who are basically real-life wizards.
They also have Baja SAE, where students build off-road buggies that look like they escaped from a monster truck rally. And Aero Design, where they design and fly remote-controlled planes. If you’re a student and you join, you get to say “I helped build a spaceship” at parties. Instant cool points.
Wait, Are They Boring Engineers?
Let’s kill another myth: SAE members are not all math robots. Many are total adrenaline junkies who live for the smell of burning rubber. They’re the people who get giddy about a new transmission design the way you get giddy about pizza. And they love to share that joy. Plus, their conferences often have free snacks. Enough said.

And listen—they’re oddly hilarious. At their big events, you’ll see grown adults arguing passionately about the best oil viscosity for a 1967 Mustang. It’s like a sports fan arguing about touchdowns, but with more torque.
