Blizzard has been clear: Official Classic Era realms are not getting wiped. They are “forever” in the sense that they’ll keep running alongside new expansions. Seasonal servers like Season of Discovery are different—those do reset periodically, but they also give you unique rewards and a built-in farewell party. So if you’re on a Classic Era realm right now, you can sleep soundly, knowing your epic mount is still waiting for you tomorrow.

On the flip side, if you’re on a PTR (public test realm), expect a thorough wipe before Cataclysm Classic launches. That’s by design. It’s a sandbox, not a permanent home. But here’s the twist: testing on a PTR makes you a pioneer. You’re shaping the experience for everyone else. That’s not a waste—that’s heroism in code.
How to Embrace the Wipe (With Style)
If you’re worried about losing progress, pivot your mindset: treat every play session like a delicious, limited-edition cookie. Instead of farming 500 ore, try something you’ve never done—like fishing for a rare hat or exploring that one cave full of mobs you always skip. Take screenshots of your guild’s inside jokes. Record a clip of your character doing a /dance emote with a random stranger. Those memories survive any wipe.
And if the worst happens—say, a server closes or a season ends—look at it as a creative reset button. You now have permission to reinvent yourself. Roll a class you’ve never played. Join a guild you’d normally avoid. Give your character a silly name like “WipeyMcWipeface.” The wipe isn’t the end; it’s the world’s most chaotic fresh start.
