You know the drill: you see a forecast for “active aurora” and you start planning your life. You text your friends, “Clear skies tonight?” and they reply with a thumbs-up emoji. Then, at 10 PM, you step outside and it’s a solid blanket of gray fluff. It’s the universe’s favorite prank. It’s like ordering a pizza with extra pepperoni and getting a cheese-less cracker.
I once drove forty minutes to a dark spot near a lake, thermos of coffee in hand, only to sit there watching the clouds glow faintly pink. My friend said, “At least the city lights aren’t bothering us.” I laughed, but inside I was bargaining with the sky: just one green flicker, I promise I’ll be a better person. Spoiler alert: the clouds stayed smug.
When the Sun Actually Cooperates
But then, there are those nights. The ones where you’re just taking the trash out, wearing pajama pants with a hole in the knee, and you look up. And there it is. A slow, shimmery ribbon of green, dancing like a lava lamp on caffeine. You freeze. Your brain stops processing English. You just stand there, neck craned, because the aurora borealis has decided to visit your street, in your boring neighborhood.
It feels like a secret. You want to call everyone, but you don’t want to sound crazy. “Hey, the sky is doing that thing! No, not rain! The pretty thing!” It’s the closest most of us get to feeling like a Viking, except your weapon is a half-full trash bag and your longship is a minivan with a dented bumper.
