Sky’s victory was a big deal because she broke a mold. Here was this little girl who was already famous for a daredevil sport (skateboarding), yet she completely owned the ballroom. She proved you don’t have to choose between being a tomboy and being graceful.
Also, let’s give a massive cheer for JT Church. He was a pro dancer—a kid himself, only 17 at the time—who was paired with a celebrity. Their partnership was pure magic. He lifted her like she was a feather, and she trusted him completely. Now that’s a relationship goal.

The show also taught us that kids can handle pressure better than most adults. Seriously, I would have fainted if Carrie Ann Inaba gave me a 7 out of 10. But Sky? She just smiled, adjusted her sequins, and did a backflip.
So, What About the Other Kids?
Can we talk about Mackenzie Ziegler for a second? She placed third, but her tango with Sage Rosen was hauntingly good. She’s literally a dance pro (from Lifetime’s “Dance Moms”), so the judges held her to a higher standard.
And then there was Tripp Palin Johnston (yes, Sarah Palin’s grandson) who managed to not embarrass himself despite having zero prior dance training. The show was basically a masterclass in “how to be adorable under extreme pressure.”
The real winner might have been the audience. We got to see kids fail, laugh, and try again without the usual cutthroat adult drama. It was refreshingly wholesome, like a hug in the form of a jive.
