Think back to the episode where Jean dressed up as a giant baby to cheer up Stacey. Or when she accidentally married a man who turned out to be a total fraud. Those moments are pure comedic gold, but Gillian plays them with such sincerity you can’t help but smile. It’s like watching your best friend trip over a curb while wearing heels—you’ve got to laugh, but you also feel their pain.
There was also that legendary scene where she tried to cook a "posh" dinner and ended up setting fire to the kitchen curtains. Honestly, it was like watching my own mother try to follow a YouTube recipe. Gillian Wright delivers those moments with a straight face that cracks just enough to let the panic through, and it’s pure magic.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Jean Slater is the character who reminds us that life is messy, loud, and often ridiculous. She’s the one who will cry at a sad advert, then steal your biscuit without asking. Gillian Wright has turned her into a cultural icon—someone we’d probably avoid in real life, but love from the safety of our sofa.
As Eastenders' Jean Slater played by Gillian Wright leaves Albert
If you ever feel like your own family drama is too much, just think of Jean. She’s probably having a worse day. And if you need a laugh, just picture Gillian Wright between takes, probably sipping a herbal tea and reading a quiet book, while Jean is screaming about a bunny boiler in her head. The contrast is hilarious.
