Tim Allen’s Buzz is a perfect storm. He’s a parody of 1980s action hero clichés. You know, the ones who never blink and always have a one-liner ready. Allen’s delivery makes Buzz both noble and utterly ridiculous.
Compare him to the original toy voice. That plastic, slightly tinny sound from Pat Fraley is exactly what a toy should sound like. It’s limited. It’s repetitive. It’s perfect for a kid’s bedroom.
So which one is the “real” Buzz? Honestly? Both. It depends on whether you’re watching a film or playing with the action figure. The duality is brilliant.
A Little History Lesson
Disney originally wanted Billy Crystal for Woody and Chevy Chase for Buzz. Can you imagine? A grumpy, sarcastic Buzz Lightyear. That timeline makes me shiver. Thank goodness they went with Allen.
Tim Allen wasn’t even the first choice for Buzz in the video games. The early Toy Story game (the one on SNES) used a sound-alike. That guy was Charlie Adler. Yes, the same guy who voiced the angry announcer in Super Mario World. Small world.
By the way, the Pixar animators used Tim Allen’s expressions for Buzz’s movements. You know that way Buzz puffs out his chest? That’s pure Tim Allen. They even used his “buh-weh” grunt for dramatic moments.
