Just for fun, let’s remember the OG Vader. In the original films, the suit was worn by David Prowse. He was a 6’7” British bodybuilder. He also didn’t know his lines were being dubbed over. Imagine training for months, saying “Luke, I am your father,” and then everyone hears James Earl Jones. Ouch. Prowse was salty about that for decades. But hey, the results are legendary.
Prowse also didn’t choreograph the lightsaber fights. That was Bob Anderson, an Olympic fencer. So even back then, Vader was a group project. It’s like the world’s scariest carpool.
Back to Rogue One: Why this Vader matters
Look, Rogue One is a war movie. It’s gritty. People die. And then Vader shows up, and suddenly it’s a horror movie. That tone shift works because of the performance. Wilding and Naprous understood the assignment: make Vader a force of nature, not just a guy in a costume. When Vader walks through that door, you feel doom. That’s acting. That’s also good lighting and sound design. But mostly acting.
Also fun fact: Wilding didn’t get to see the final version until the premiere. He said he almost cried. I don’t blame him. I almost cried too—from fear. And joy. And because I ate too much popcorn.
