The book doesn’t hand us a precise year like 2026 or 2075. But author Suzanne Collins dropped a few breadcrumbs for us to follow.
In the original novel, Katniss mentions that the country of Panem rose from the ashes of North America “sometime in the future.” However, the 93rd Hunger Games give us a huge clue: the Games have been running for exactly 93 years.
Most fans and careful readers agree that the First Rebellion and the start of the Games happen roughly 75 to 100 years from now. That places the story somewhere around the 2090s or 2100s.
How We Know (Without a Time Machine)
Think about it like figuring out how old your grandma’s favorite recipe is. If she’s been making it every Thanksgiving since 1950, and she’s made it 74 times… well, you can do the math.
Collins wrote a timeline into the prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. That story happens 64 years before Katniss volunteers. So if Coriolanus Snow is 18 in that book, and Katniss is 16 in hers, the distance between the two is just a few generations.
It’s like comparing your great-uncle’s high school yearbook to your own—different clothes, different music, but still the same old school building.
