Most people think the aurora peaks at the stroke of midnight. That’s a good guess, but the truth is a bit more flexible.
The best time to see the aurora tonight is usually between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. Think of it like the aurora’s prime-time TV slot—except the show is unpredictable and totally free.
Why this window? Because that’s when the spot on Earth you’re standing on is tilted directly into the solar wind. It’s like turning your face into a gentle breeze—except the breeze is made of electrified particles from the sun.
But Wait—Check the Kp Index First
You can’t just show up at 11 p.m. and expect a light show. The Kp index (a scale from 0 to 9) tells you how strong the geomagnetic activity is. If it’s 3 or below, you might get a faint green haze. If it’s 5 or higher, you’re in for a wild ride.
Tonight’s forecast? A quick check online (like on the NOAA website or aurora apps) will tell you the expected Kp index for your location. It’s like checking the weather, but way cooler—because the “rain” is made of glowing oxygen and nitrogen.
