For most regular-season Thursday Night Football games, the Detroit Lions usually kick off at 8:15 PM Eastern Time. Yes, that’s the standard. But hold your cheese curds—the NFL loves a curveball. Sometimes they schedule a special Thursday game, like on Thanksgiving, and then all bets are off.
On Thanksgiving, the Lions are practically a national heirloom. They play at 12:30 PM Eastern Time, which is basically breakfast for normal people but a religious ceremony for football fans. It’s a very specific time that lets you eat turkey, argue with your uncle, and watch the Lions do something hilariously chaotic before 4 PM.
So, the golden rule: Always double-check the week. If it’s a random Thursday in October? 8:15 PM ET. If it’s the fourth Thursday of November? 12:30 PM ET. The NFL gods love keeping us humble.
Why This Time Zone Trickery Exists
The 8:15 PM ET slot exists because the NFL realized we all have jobs and need to pretend to be productive until late afternoon. It’s the perfect time to secretly stream the game on your phone while “working” from your laptop. You’ll look like you’re analyzing spreadsheets, but really, you’re analyzing whether Jared Goff will throw an interception in the first quarter.
And don’t even get me started on the West Coast folks. For you, a 8:15 PM ET kickoff means the game starts at 5:15 PM PT. That’s practically happy hour. You’ll be eating guacamole while the Lions are still warming up. Meanwhile, East Coasters are chugging coffee to stay awake for the fourth quarter.
