The Lions have a weird, wonderful place in American culture. Ever seen the movie “Paper Lion” from 1968? It’s based on George Plimpton’s book about him playing quarterback for the team’s preseason—a story that’s part comedy, part anthropological study of football’s soul. Then there’s the iconic ROAR of the Lions’ mascot, which is basically the audio version of a Detroit handshake: firm, unapologetic, and a little bit loud.

And let’s not forget Thanksgiving—the Lions have hosted a game every single year since 1934, except during WWII. That tradition is like your family’s annual argument over the dinner table: messy, beloved, and impossible to skip. When you ask “What time do the Lions play?” on Turkey Day, the answer is almost always 12:30 PM ET, right after the Macy’s parade.
Practical Tips for the Lazy Fan (We See You)
Okay, you’re hungover, or maybe you just woke up at noon. No judgment. Here’s how to catch the game without a full mental overhaul: stream it via the NFL app, YouTube TV, or a bar with patience for your questions. If you’re at a sports bar, know that the Lions are usually the main event in Detroit, but call ahead to confirm the game is on their big screen—sometimes the local hockey team hijacks the audio.
Also, follow @Lions on X (formerly Twitter) for real-time updates if you’re stuck at a family brunch. The fan accounts are chaotic, funny, and oddly therapeutic—like collective therapy without the co-pay.
