First, dress in layers. You’ll be cold waiting outside, then overheated inside as you wrestle for a toaster. Second, bring a reusable bag—many stores stopped providing free carrier bags on Boxing Day in 2026, citing waste. Third, plan your route with public transport timetables; buses and trains run on a Sunday schedule in 2026, meaning less frequent but still operating. Check apps like Citymapper or Google Maps the night before.
Lastly, and most importantly: make a list. The chaos of Boxing Day can turn a rational human into a feral bargain-hunter. I once bought a foam roller, a juicer, and a bird feeder on the same trip—I own no birds. Write down three things you actually need, and stick to them. Your inner peace (and your bank account) will thank you.

The Fun Fact to Impress Your Friends
Did you know that Boxing Day gets its name from the tradition of giving “Christmas boxes”—gifts of money or leftover food—to service workers and tradespeople? In 2026, some stores like Boots and Superdrug will actually reserve a small stock of gift sets for exactly this purpose. So if you forgot to tip the postman or thank the cleaner, you can buy a box of chocolates on the 26th and hand it over with a blush. It’s the circle of capitalism—and kindness.
Another one: Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday. That means Sunday trading laws apply to the 27th, but the 26th itself is a full retail free-for-all. Take advantage; the next Saturday Boxing Day won’t happen again until 2032. Yes, I checked the calendar. You’re welcome.
