The name “Delhi” likely comes from an ancient legend. The Mahabharata mentions a city called Indraprastha that was founded in this exact area. Later, a king named Dhilu supposedly founded the settlement, leading to the name.
Some historians also suggest it comes from the word Dhilli, meaning “loose, sandy soil” (which the region has tons of). So, depending on who you ask, the capital might be named after a myth, a king, or dirt. That’s history for you—always messy.
But I prefer the dirt theory. It reminds us that even the grandest capitals are just glorified piles of earth with a lot of ambition.
