Picture this: Rick, impaled on rebar, bleeding out over a bridge as walkers swarm. He shoots a stick of dynamite (yes, dynamite) to blow the horde to bits. The explosion is massive, the bridge collapses, and we think he’s gone.
But wait—the camera pans up to the sky, and we see chopper blades. Jadis, who vanished earlier, appears in the helicopter and pulls him aboard. It’s a cinematic gut-punch that leaves you crying and confused. Practical tip: Keep tissues nearby when you watch this one. You’ll need them.
This season 9 moment also introduces the Rick Grimes movies—a planned trilogy focusing on his time in the Civic Republic. If you’re a completionist, this episode is the launch pad for the franchise’s future, including the spin-off The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
The Walking Dead Season 4 Rick Dies
What About the Comic Books?
For the purists: in Robert Kirkman’s comics, Rick dies in Issue #193. It’s a quiet, shocking moment where he’s shot by Sebastian Milton. The show, however, took a different path—a classic example of adaptation where the spirit of the story survives even when the plot doesn’t.
This creative divergence is a cultural reference that fans debate over beer. It’s like comparing the original Blade Runner to the director’s cut—both great, but one hits differently. If you’re a reader, the comic provides closure; the show offers a door left ajar.
