Don’t sleep on Edinburgh. Scotland’s capital is a beautiful, historic city with prices that climb like the extinct volcano it’s built on. Renting a flat near the Royal Mile will cost you more than a month’s salary for a professional bagpiper. The festival season makes everything even worse—August is basically financial torture in a tartan hat.
Then there’s Bristol, the cool kid of the UK. Banksy painted here, and the property market paints itself as an outright robbery. House prices have surged 60% in five years, making it the fastest-rising city for home costs. You get colorful houses, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and a bank account that is definitely suspended.
Bristol is so popular that renting a parking space can cost you £200 a month. That’s more than a gym membership you won’t use. But at least your car will be fit. Locals joke that the only way to afford a house is to invent a time machine and buy in 1995.
