Here’s a little secret from someone who once sent a present by pigeon (not really, but I felt like it). Buy your stamps and print your postage labels online now. It feels absurdly early, but it means you can post something from your own doorstep by just popping it in a postbox.
Another game changer? Keep a small stash of “emergency gifts” that are easy to post—like gift cards for major retailers or a subscription to a streaming service. If you miss the date for a physical parcel, these can be emailed instantly. Your brother will still love you even if his present arrives in a digital envelope.
Also, don’t forget the humble Christmas card. A card posted on December 22nd with a First Class stamp can still make it, but it’s a gamble. Write your cards in early December, stamp them, and hold them hostage by your keys. That way, you can drop them in the postbox during any random errand.
What happens if you actually miss the last date?
First, don’t panic. You have options, but they involve a bit more cash or a lot more clever thinking. Special Delivery Guaranteed is your new best friend—it can get a parcel there on Christmas Eve for a price that hurts a little, but less than a disappointed niece will.

Alternatively, embrace the digital alternative. Send a video message, a photo book, or a voucher. Honestly, most people treasure a funny video of you burning a Yorkshire pudding more than they do another pair of gloves. It’s the thought, not the courier service.
And for the truly chaotic: you can always hand-deliver it yourself. Drive across town, knock on their door, and say, “I’m the last posting date now.” They’ll laugh, you’ll feel heroic, and you’ll save about £15 in postage.
