What makes the 2026 list so special is the sheer variety. You don’t have to be a general to get a gong. In fact, the best stories are the small ones.
Consider the RAF Corporal who spent his weekends fixing up old motorbikes for veterans. Or the Army Captain who created a mental health app that hundreds of soldiers now use to sleep better at night.
These aren’t huge government projects. They’re just people using their spare time and skills to look after one another. It’s like that neighbour who always lends you a lawnmower, but with a military ID card.
The “Aha!” Moment
There’s always one story in the list that makes you smile out loud. Maybe it’s a Royal Marine who ran a marathon in full kit to raise money for a dog charity. Or a Warrant Officer who taught a whole battalion how to bake sourdough bread to beat the boredom of deployment.

These little human touches are what tie the military to our everyday lives. They remind us that the men and women in uniform are just like us. They get tired, they get lonely, and they really appreciate a good cup of tea.
When you hear the name “Military New Year’s Honours List 2026,” don’t think of a dusty rulebook. Think of a big, warm, national “well done.”
