The easiest trick? Check online before you leave the house. The Royal Mail website has a nifty branch finder that shows bank holiday hours for your local spot. It’s like checking the weather before a picnic—except the “rain” is a locked door and a queue of disappointed people. You can also call ahead, but let’s be real: nobody wants to talk on the phone anymore. A quick search on your phone while you’re brushing your teeth saves you a wasted trip.

Another pro tip: look for “Crown” Post Offices in big city centres. These are the main, often 9-to-5 kind of branches, and they tend to have more predictable holiday hours. Meanwhile, the little one tucked inside your local corner shop might close at a whim, like a cat deciding it’s nap time. If you’re in a rush, go for the bigger branch. It’s less charming, but it’s open.
The real-life pay-off
I once missed a bank holiday post office by five minutes. I needed to send a passport application, and the counter closed at 12:30. I arrived at 12:35, waving the forms like a maniac. The lady behind the glass just shook her head and mouthed, “Sorry, love.” I spent the next two days convincing myself that my holiday could wait—but it couldn’t. That’s the thing: Post Office hours are the gatekeepers of our errands. They decide if your bank holiday is peaceful or frantic.
Here’s a small story that might make you smile: my neighbour, Dave, once drove 20 minutes to a Post Office on a bank holiday Monday because his local one was closed. He found it open, but the queue was so long he ended up chatting to a woman behind him about her dog’s hip problems. They became friends. Now they walk their dogs together every Sunday. So yes, disrupted hours can be annoying. But they can also lead to surprise community bonding, like a bad TV show that grows on you.
