You can call for updates on an existing application. That’s the most common reason. “Hi, I sent my forms three weeks ago and it still says ‘received.’ Is it lost in a bin somewhere?” They can check the system for you.
You can also ask about urgent appointments. If you need a passport in 24 hours, you don’t mail it in—you book a “Premium” or “Fast Track” appointment at a physical office. Newport is one of those offices, by the way, so if you live nearby, you can actually visit in person for an emergency. It feels like winning a small lottery.
What you can’t do is ask them to “just hurry it up because you forgot.” Sorry, but the system has rules. They’re humans, not wizards. But they are very good at explaining the rules in a way that makes you feel less like a chicken running around with your head cut off.
A Little Story to Ease Your Nerves
A friend of mine once called the Newport number at 8 AM on a Monday. Her daughter’s passport was delayed, and the family trip to Disneyland Paris was in five days. She was in full panic mode. The woman on the phone said, “Don’t worry, love. I’ve seen worse. Someone once sent us their passport in a biscuit tin.” My friend laughed, the call got sorted, and the passport arrived on Thursday.

That’s the energy you want: calm, competent, and slightly amused by the chaos of our lives. The Newport team has a reputation for being just that—professional, but with a touch of Welsh warmth.
