You can fight back, and it’s surprisingly satisfying. First, sign up for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) in the UK. It’s free and it blocks most legal spam calls. It’s like putting a “No Junk Mail” sticker on your phone. Do it today.
Second, never answer a call from a number you don’t know. Let it go to voicemail. If it’s important, they’ll leave a message. Real people leave messages. Scammers usually don’t, because they’re too busy calling the next potato-peeler on their list.
Third, when you do accidentally answer, have fun with it. Pretend you’re a busy dolphin trainer or that you live in a shoebox. Waste their time instead of them wasting yours. One woman I know kept asking the scammer about his cat for ten minutes. She said it was the most fun she’d had all week.
Finally, block and report every number. It feels great. On an iPhone, just tap the little “i” and scroll down to “Block this Caller.” Do it with a sense of power. Each block is a tiny victory against the robots. You are the hero of your own phone.
So put the kettle on, ignore that “unknown” number, and enjoy your peace. You have earned a life without Kevin from Birmingham.
