First off, that “D-U-N-S” is short for Data Universal Numbering System. Sounds fancy, right? It’s basically a nine-digit code that D&B assigns to almost every business on the planet. Think of it as a Social Security number for a company—unique, permanent, and surprisingly hard to forge.
Over 400 million businesses have one. If you’re doing any serious B2B work, you’re going to run into this number sooner or later. And when you do, don’t panic.
Why Bother with a Lookup? (Spoiler: It’s Not Just for Boring People)
Look, you could just type a company name into Google and hope for the best. But that’s like trusting a stranger at a bus stop with your wallet. A D-U-N-S lookup gives you the real skinny: legal name, address, credit score, and even payment history.
I once used it to discover a “local bakery” was actually a shell company registered in Delaware. (Big yikes.) You get to see if a supplier is paying their bills on time or if they’re hiding behind a fancy logo. It’s like gossip, but with spreadsheets and zero judgment.
