This isn’t your local leisure centre. The Royal Docks is a proper, giant, 100-year-old dock. It’s a massive, rectangular lake plonked right in the middle of a buzzing city. You’re swimming in history, people. Ships used to dock here. Now, it’s you and the swans.
The water is cleaner than the Thames. Seriously. It’s filtered and managed, so you won’t come out smelling like a Victorian sewer. It’s technically a “open water” venue, but it feels like a swimming pool that decided to get a cool, industrial haircut.
Why it’s just fun
First, the views. You’re bobbing in the water, looking up at the iconic Thames Barrier and the sparkling O2 Arena. Then, a plane from London City Airport roars about 50 feet above your head. You feel like you’re in a movie scene, but the movie is also a washing machine.
Second, the temperature. It’s bracing. It’s not Arctic, but it’s definitely refreshing. In summer, it’s glorious. In winter, it’s a full-body alarm clock. Your toes will scream, but your brain will thank you.
