The American Heart Association gives lean poultry (including turkey) a big thumbs up. Studies show that replacing red meat with poultry can lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by a modest but meaningful amount.

One study found that eating lean poultry instead of red meat reduced LDL by about 5–10%. That’s not a miracle, but it’s enough to make your doctor smile and maybe high-five you from across the room.

Another fun fact: Turkey contains tryptophan, which helps with sleep. So you can eat a heart-healthy dinner, then nap like a champion. Multi-tasking at its finest.

A Quick Note on Ground Turkey

Ground turkey is where people sometimes get tricked. The fat content varies wildly. 93% lean ground turkey is great. 85% lean is okay but much higher in fat. And “premium” ground turkey might include dark meat and skin—basically the turkey’s “party mode.”

Always read the label. If it says “ground turkey,” not “ground turkey breast,” it could have up to 9 grams of fat per serving. Your innocent taco night just became a cholesterol carnival.

When in doubt, buy “extra lean ground turkey” or “ground turkey breast.” Your heart will thank you, and your taste buds won’t even notice if you season it well. Cumin is your friend.
