Here’s the cold, hard truth: Yes, statistically, there’s almost certainly someone out there who fits the bill. But it’s not like the movies. No trench coats, no creepy van with “Free Candy” painted on the side.
Most modern serial killers are elusive ghosts—they’re the guy next door, the nurse with a steady hand, or the trucker who drives through the night. Scary, right? But also weirdly boring.
What counts as a serial killer these days?
The FBI says it’s someone who kills two or more people in separate events, with a cooling-off period. That’s a pretty low bar, honestly. By that definition, the UK has had a few high-profile cases recently.
Let me throw some names at you: Lucy Letby (the nurse who killed babies, shudder). Levi Bellfield (still behind bars, but he’s a nasty piece of work). Then there’s the unsolved M25 killer—a case that feels ripped from a Netflix script.
So yes, killers are out there. But are they actively hunting right this second? Probably, but they’re being very, very quiet about it.
