Derek Jeter's ancestors on his mom's side were from Spain and the Dominican Republic, which is where the Hispanic connection comes in. But, Jeter himself has said that he doesn't really identify as Hispanic, which is fair enough. After all, identity is complex, and it's up to each person to decide how they want to identify.
Now, you might be thinking, "Wait, doesn't this make him biracial or multiracial?" And, yes, that's true! Derek Jeter's background is a beautiful mix of different cultures, which is something to be proud of. Culture is what makes us unique, and Jeter's certainly got a fascinating one.
