Here’s where it gets properly fun. What if Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday? Do you lose your precious day off? Absolutely not. The UK government has a secret rule for this.
If Boxing Day lands on a weekend, you get a substitute bank holiday. Usually the following Monday. Or even the Tuesday if Christmas Day was also on the weekend—those are the golden years. It creates a glorious, confusing four-day weekend that feels like you’ve hacked the system.

Think about it: 2026 looks wild. Christmas on a Friday, Boxing Day on a Saturday. That means you get Monday 28th off as the substitute. It’s basically a full week of doing nothing. You lucky, lucky duck.
What Actually Happens on Boxing Day?
So the law says you’re off. But what are you supposed to do with it? Traditionally, it was the day servants got their “Christmas box” (a gift of money or leftovers) from their employers. Very Victorian. Very Downton Abbey.
Nowadays? It’s a glorious free-for-all. Some people hit the sales like they’re training for the Olympics. Others stay in their pyjamas until 4pm, re-gifting the ugly jumper from Aunt Carol.
And let’s not forget the sports. The Boxing Day football matches are practically a religious event. And horse racing. And the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, which is definitely a thing we pretend to care about. It’s all part of the tapestry.
But here’s the real truth: your bank holiday entitlement is precious. It’s a hard-won right, fought for by generations of grumpy workers. Don’t waste it on being productive.
