Remember that guy that landed on my nose? Springtails aren’t technically insects (they’re hexapods), but I’m including them because they are the true kings of accidental jumping. They have a forked appendage called a furcula tucked under their belly. When startled, they snap it down like a mousetrap, hurling themselves ten centimeters into the air—which is like a human jumping over a skyscraper.
But here’s the kicker: they can’t control where they land. Ever. So they just bounce around like popcorn in a hot pan, hoping to land somewhere safe. (I feel this on a spiritual level.)
