Written by Shania and her then-husband, producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, the lyrics are deceptively simple. The entire chorus is basically a list of “girly” stuff: manicures, push-up bras, high heels, and quoting from The Divine Comedy—wait, no, that’s not right. It’s about not having to “act like a lady” and embracing the mess of being a woman. It’s pure empowerment disguised as a shopping mall trip.
But here’s the surprising truth: this song almost didn’t make the album. Shania herself thought it was too goofy. Imagine a world without this anthem. We’d still be moping around with “You’re Still the One” (which is lovely, but where’s the high kick?). Fortunately, “Mutt” Lange, a man who also wrote Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” knew a banger when he heard one. He pushed for it, and thank the universe for his stubborn husbandry.
Lyrics That Are Basically a License to Be a Hot Mess
Let’s dissect the opening lines: “I’m gonna go out tonight, I’m gonna paint the town / I’m gonna show ’em all what I’m all about.” That’s not just a plan; it’s a declaration of war against your sensible sweatpants. The song gives you official permission to leave the house with mascara that may or may not be an inch thick. It’s the musical equivalent of saying, “Yes, I just spent 40 minutes on this outfit, and I will absolutely spill red wine on it, and I don’t care.”
My favorite line is the classic: “The best thing about being a woman / Is the prerogative to have a little fun and / Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy, forget I’m a lady.” That’s a legal loophole for every questionable decision you’ve ever made. Forgot to pay your parking ticket? Woman prerogative. Ate a whole cake on a Tuesday? Hey, forget I’m a lady. This song is basically a get-out-of-jail-free card for the soul.
