You’ve heard the old saying: “Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.” It’s a cute rhyme. It is also a lie.
Many stopcocks are quarter-turn valves. You only need a 90-degree twist. Think of turning a doorknob halfway.
If you spin it five times like a maniac, you might break it. Be gentle. Be a plumbing poet.
Look for the Handle Shape
Is the handle a straight lever? Like a tiny metal stick? Then you just need to turn it until it’s perpendicular to the pipe.
If it’s a round wheel, like a miniature steering wheel? Okay, now you can use the old rhyme. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
But seriously, if it fights you? Stop. Stopcocks are grumpy. Forcing them is a bad idea.
