The number one rule for yellow squash is this: smaller is better. You aren’t trying to grow a weapon for a medieval reenactment.
Your ideal squash is about 4 to 6 inches long. That’s roughly the length of a decent banana, but with fewer potassium jokes.
If it gets much bigger than 8 inches, the seeds get tough and the skin turns into a leather coat. It’s still edible, but you’ll be doing a lot of scooping and peeling, which is no fun for anyone.
A Note on Zucchini (Yes, We’re Judging a Little)
People often confuse yellow squash with zucchini. The same rule applies: gorgeous and petite is the goal. If it looks like it could double as a dumbbell, you’ve waited too long.
Imagine picking squash at the supermarket. You’d never grab the one that looks like a swollen grudge. You’d grab the ones that are firm, bright, and cute. Be that shopper in your own garden.
