Those silky threads at the tip tell a story, too. Good corn silk is golden brown, slightly sticky, and easy to remove. If the silk is black, slimy, or smells like last week’s laundry, the corn is on its way out.
Also, check for fresh green silk hidden deeper inside. That can mean worms—no joke. If you see it, toss the ear. No one wants extra protein in their corn on the cob.
Pro tip: Pull the husk back slightly near the tip. If the silk slides off easily and smells okay, you’re probably good. If it resists or stinks, the ear’s a no-go.
