Here’s where things get fun. Pure compounds have one sharp, clean boiling point. But if your compound is mixed with something else (like salt in water, or a dash of mystery sludge), the boiling point changes. Impurities raise the boiling point (thank you, colligative properties). So if you think you’re boiling pure acetone but it keeps climbing past 56°C, your sample is a party crasher.
How do you know if it’s impure? Watch the temperature. If it slowly creeps up even after boiling starts, your compound has friends it didn’t invite. The only way to fix this? Distill it. Or accept that your chemistry experiment is now a chaotic house guest.
