Don’t use soil from your backyard—it’s too heavy. Use a light, sandy potting mix for conifers. And don’t yell at your seed if it doesn’t sprout. Nature is not a vending machine.
If you have squirrels in your area, protect your pot. They will dig up your seed like it’s a buried treasure. Cover the pot with a little mesh or wire until the seedling gets tough.
Finally, give your pine a quirky name. I called my first one “Leif.” Yes, after the Viking explorer. It makes watering him feel like a small adventure.
So go ahead. Find a cone. Trick a seed with your fridge. Plant a future giant. Who knows? One day, you might look out your window and see a forest you started with a damp paper towel and a little bit of hope. That’s pretty cool, right?
