Did a tree branch punch a hole in your roof? Is there a rusted-out spot the size of a melon? Don’t reach for the caulk. You need a patch. Buy a piece of corrugated metal from the hardware store (or a metal scrap yard, for budget points).
Cut it so it overlaps the hole by at least three inches on all sides. Slide it under the shingles or overlapping sheet above the hole if you can. Then screw it down into the roof structure underneath. Use lots of screws. Caulk every single screw head. Caulk the entire edge of the patch. You’re basically giving the hole a metal hug.

Pro tip: Use a dab of sealant on the back of the patch before you screw it down. This creates a gasket effect. Very fancy. Very dry.
