Most states charge a fee. It’s usually small—$5 to $20. But in some places, it’s $30 for a “change of address” plus a “new sticker” fee. Absurd.
Why do they charge? Because they can. Also, they claim it covers “system updates.” You know what else costs $20? A mediocre pizza. But I digress.
Sometimes, if you move out of state, you pay a transfer fee. Plus taxes. Plus a “we’re going to miss you” surcharge. (Okay, that last one is a joke. But barely.)
