So, how old was Finn Wolfhard when he first stepped into the Hawkins lab? The answer is twelve. That’s right, a solid, pre-teen, middle-school-aged twelve.
Think about that for a second. At twelve, most of us were worried about getting the right lunch table or whether our bike had cool enough streamers on the handlebars. Finn was busy outrunning a Demogorgon and negotiating with a pissed-off Eleven.
It’s almost unfair. I remember being twelve and my biggest acting challenge was pretending I hadn’t just eaten the last slice of pizza. Finn was out there delivering lines about the Upside Down like it was casual Tuesday.

What’s genuinely hilarious is that twelve is actually younger than his character, Mike Wheeler. In the show, Mike is supposed to be around thirteen or fourteen. So Finn spent Season 1 playing a kid older than himself.
That’s like a small dog acting like a big dog. You know the energy is there, but the legs are just a little too short. It added this endearing underdog vibe to the whole group, especially when he was trying to be the brave leader.
Let’s be real: at twelve, I couldn’t even commit to a movie rental without triple-checking the synopsis. Finn was committing to an entire sci-fi horror series as the heart of the team. That takes guts—or at least, a really good mom driving you to set.
