Maybe you got this laptop from a friend, or a sketchy online seller. You have no idea when it was made. That’s fine. We can be detectives.
Look at the Hardware Overview in the “System Report.” Hold down the Option key while clicking the Apple menu, then “System Information.” Under Hardware, you’ll see something called “Boot ROM Version” or “Model Identifier.”
Copy that model identifier (it’s like “MacBookPro16,2”). Paste it into Google. You’ll immediately find Reddit threads or tech blogs screaming, “This model launched in 2026!” Congratulations, you’re a forensic computer scientist now.
But Why Does Age Really Matter?
Okay, so you know it’s from 2017. That’s fun, but you’re sneaking a look at your wallet, aren’t you? Age tells you if your Mac is vintage or just old. Apple considers a product “vintage” after seven years. That means no more repairs from Apple. Gulp.
Also, older Macs stop getting major macOS updates. Your 2015 MacBook Pro can’t run the latest Sonoma update. It’s like your laptop aged out of the cool kids’ table. Cruel, but true.
