If you’ve seen photos of Lionel with his daughter Sofia, you might’ve done a double-take. She’s 25, and he looks like her slightly older, incredibly cool uncle. Lionel became a dad again at 49, which means he was changing diapers while most men his age were shopping for retirement homes. He famously said, “She keeps me young,” which is probably true—nothing keeps you on your toes like a teenager asking for the Wi-Fi password while you’re trying to write a love ballad.
So, how old is Lionel Richie? 74 years on the calendar, but about 37 years in spirit, and 12 years in dance moves. He’s the same age as your favorite pair of jeans: comfortable, classic, and somehow still in style.

What’s Next for the Legend?
Will he ever retire? Knowing Lionel, retirement probably means trading his Grammy award nights for karaoke nights on his private island. At 74, he’s still planning tours, still writing songs, and still joking on American Idol that he’s “just getting started.” If you ask him, he’ll probably wink and say, “I’m only as old as I feel, and right now, I feel like I’m 22 and in love.” That’s the power of soul music, folks.
We can all learn something from Lionel Richie. Age isn’t a number; it’s an attitude. It’s about whether you still get excited hearing the opening piano notes of “Easy.” It’s about whether you still dance when nobody’s watching. Lionel Richie is 74 years old—and he has never, ever stopped dancing.
So here’s the uplifting conclusion you’ve been waiting for: Lionel Richie isn’t getting older; he’s getting richer in joy, in music, and in memories. And you can be, too. Next time you hear one of his songs, don’t count the years—count the smiles. Because at 74, Lionel Richie isn’t just a singer. He’s a reminder that life is a party, and you’re always invited. All night long.
