Here’s my favorite life hack. The knuckle method. After rinsing your rice (yes, rinse it—you’re washing off starch, not flavor), place the rice in a pot. Level it out. Then touch your index finger to the top of the rice.
Add water until it reaches your first knuckle. No, really. Fill the water until it hits that little joint. That’s roughly the right level. It works for most pots and most rice. I don’t know the science, but it’s never failed me. Try it. You’ll feel like a rice wizard.
Unless you have tiny or giant hands. Then, maybe test it once. But honestly, it’s still better than guessing.
