For a standard adult passport renewal (that’s you, with a passport issued less than 15 years ago and in decent shape), the base fee is $130. That’s the cost of the application itself. But here’s the kicker: you also have to pay a $35 “execution fee” if you go in person, but for a simple mail-in renewal, you’re only on the hook for the $130. Yes, it’s confusing—welcome to government pricing.
If you’re renewing from a previous adult passport (Form DS-82), the total is $130 even if you mail it in. No extra execution fee. That’s the cheapest route, and it’s honestly not bad for a booklet that lasts ten years. That breaks down to thirteen dollars a year for the freedom to flee the country. Bargain, right?
But Wait—What If You Need It Now?
Here’s where the costs get spicy. The standard processing time is currently 6 to 8 weeks (or longer if you’re unlucky). If you’ve got a flight in two weeks like I did, you’re looking at expedited service. That adds a $60 fee on top of the $130, bringing you to $190. And even then, expedited can take 2 to 3 weeks. Not exactly “emergency” speed, is it?
If you’re truly in a panic—like, your flight is in 72 hours—you need to book an appointment at a regional passport agency. That’s free for the appointment itself, but you still pay the $130 plus the $60 expedite fee. Oh, and you’ll also pay for the privilege of stress. You’ll likely have to travel to the nearest agency, which could be hours away, and take a day off work. That’s not a dollar figure on the receipt, but it’s a real cost.
And then there’s the private expediting services. Companies like RushMyPassport or Passportvisaexpress will handle the paperwork for you—for a fee that starts around $100 and can go up to $500+ for same-day service. Look, I get it: desperation is a hell of a drug. But you’re paying for convenience, not speed, because the government still processes your application at the same pace. You’re just paying someone to hold your hand.
