I’m not a “drink from a giant jug” person. I found that a 20-ounce glass on my desk works best. Why? Because I can see it. If it’s there, I’ll drink it out of boredom. If I hide it in a cabinet? Forget it. Out of sight, out of bladder, I guess.

Set a timer. Seriously—your phone won’t judge you. Every hour, drink 8 ounces. That’s just one big gulp. By 5 PM, you’ve hit 64 ounces without even trying. Unless you’re like me and ignore the alarm because you’re in “the zone.” In that case, pair water with a habit: every time you check Twitter, take a sip. Your timeline will still be toxic, but at least you’ll be hydrated while scrolling.

When more is actually too much (yes, that’s a thing)

Over-hydration is rare, but it’s real. Drinking over 100 ounces in a few hours can mess with your sodium levels, causing headaches or nausea. Don’t fear the water bottle, just don’t treat it like a competitive sport. Listen to your body: if your stomach is sloshing when you walk, you’ve probably had enough.

Also, be honest: are you drinking water because you’re thirsty, or because you’re bored and want a break from your screen? I’m guilty of the latter. Sometimes a snack or a walk is what you really need—water won’t fix existential dread, but it’ll keep your skin from looking like a prune while you figure it out.
