Plot twist: What if you want to use the car temporarily but keep it SORNed most of the time? You can’t really do that. Once you tax it, the SORN is automatically cancelled. You’ll need to re-SORN it later if you put it back in storage.
Think of it like a one-way door. For short trips, just tax it, drive it, then re-apply SORN the day you park it again. The DVLA doesn’t care about your on-again, off-again relationship with your car.
What If I Sold the Car While SORNed?
If you bought a SORNed car (hello, cheap project car), the seller should have notified the DVLA. You now own the SORN status. To un-SORN it, you simply tax it in your name—same process, just with your V5C document.

One catch: The V5C might still be in the previous owner’s name. If so, you need a V62 form to apply for a new log book first. That takes weeks. Don’t be me: I bought a “running project” that turned into a clipboard nightmare.
