We all know the Highway Code is basically the rulebook for not being a menace on the road. But did you know it has opinions about your air conditioning?

It’s not illegal to have your AC on. Thank goodness—I’d melt into a puddle without it.

The problem isn’t the cold air itself. It’s what you do while you’re enjoying it.

Idling: The Silent Wallet-Sucker

Picture this: you’re waiting to pick up a friend. It’s a scorcher. You leave the engine running so the AC keeps blasting. Boom. You’ve just entered “illegal idling” territory.

Rule 123 of the Highway Code is very clear: don’t leave your engine running unnecessarily. This includes while you’re parked, waiting in a queue, or chilling outside a school.

The fine? Up to £80 in most areas, and in London, it can rocket to £160 or more. That’s a steep price for a ten-minute shiver.

Think of it this way: you’re paying for cold air with hot money. Not a great trade.
