You might remember Tamatoa from that one scene where he casually mentions he was once a snail—a detail that the movie’s writers put in purely as a joke. But because he’s a sea creature in a Disney movie, people immediately started theorizing. Was Tamatoa a hermit crab who evolved? Was he a mutated mollusk? And why does he have David Bowie hair?

The answer, according to co-director Ron Clements, is simple: “We thought it would be funny if the giant, scary crab was actually just a sad ex-snail.” That’s the level of genius we’re dealing with here. Jemaine Clement took that absurd premise and turned it into a villain who steals the show for exactly six minutes.

How Much Did He Steal the Show?

So much so that Disney’s marketing team originally tried to hide him. Trailers barely showed Tamatoa, because they wanted audiences to focus on the cute pig and the chicken. But then the movie hit theaters, and suddenly every cosplayer was making crab-shell hats. Clement’s delivery of the line “I really don’t mind… your moooo-ney!” became an instant earworm that replaced all your other thoughts for three days.

In fact, Clement improvised about 80% of Tamatoa’s spoken dialogue. The script only said: “Crab taunts Maui.” What we got was a crack about a “poor, unfortunate, helpless, tiny little clam” that feels like a personal attack on anyone who has ever called tech support.
