If your usual payment date falls smack on a bank holiday—Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year’s Day—the DWP is giving you a little gift. They’ll push that payment to the last working day before the holiday. That means you get your cash earlier. Yes, you read that right: earlier.

Think of it as the government’s way of saying, “Go ahead, buy that extra tin of biscuits. We won’t tell.” Just don’t spend it all in one place… unless that place is the grocery store for emergency mince pies.

When Exactly Is “Earlier”?

For Christmas 2026, if your payment lands on a Wednesday (Christmas Day) or Thursday (Boxing Day), you’ll get it on Tuesday, December 24th. That’s Christmas Eve! If you normally get paid on New Year’s Day (a Wednesday), you’ll get the cash on Tuesday, December 31st. Happy New Year’s Eve, indeed!

This applies to Universal Credit, State Pension, and most other DWP benefits. The same rule works for Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, and Pension Credit. Basically, if the DWP touches it, it’s getting shifted.

Now, a little warning: because you’re getting paid earlier, you’ll have a longer gap between that payment and the next one. So, maybe don’t blow the whole lot on a novelty Santa hat. Budget like a sensible adult who still wants to have fun. Or, you know, just buy the hat and live on beans for a week. I won’t judge.
