First, a quick biology lesson. All spiders are venomous (they inject venom), but poisonous means you’d get sick if you ate them. Please don’t eat a spider, even if you’re on a keto diet. In the UK, we have zero spiders that can kill you, and only a handful that can even make you wince.
Our most “dangerous” resident is the False Widow (Steatoda nobilis), which sounds like a pirate’s ex-girlfriend. It arrived from the Canary Islands in the 1870s, probably looking for better weather and a decent cup of tea. Its bite? Imagine a mild wasp sting followed by a bit of swelling. For most people, it’s like being pinched by a grumpy accountant.
The Real Villains Are Tiny
You want to know who’s actually a threat? The Woodlouse Spider. It has giant red fangs that look like tiny daggers. But here’s the joke: it’s so shy it only bites if you literally sit on it. And even then, the venom is weaker than your aunt’s gossip.
Then there’s the Tube Web Spider, which builds a silk tunnel and waits like a fluffy, eight-legged Gollum. Its bite can cause a bit of nausea and a thumping headache—but only if you’re unlucky enough to be allergic. Again, no hospital stays required.
