Distilled water isn’t cheap. A gallon costs about a dollar, and a humidifier can chug through two gallons a night. That adds up to mountain-of-late-coffee money over a winter.
Enter the hero move: Buy a countertop water distiller. It’s a $80–100 gadget that turns tap water into distilled water at home. Over a season, it pays for itself. Plus, you look like a mad scientist.
Or, use a demineralization cartridge. Some humidifier brands sell these fancy filters that attach to the tank. They trap minerals so you can use tap water. Magic? Pretty close. Just replace them monthly.
What About Bottled Water?
Bottled water isn’t distilled. It’s usually spring or purified, which still has minerals. So no, your Fiji bottle won’t save you. Unless you’re just trying to flex on your humidifier.
And never use essential oils in the water. They break the plastic and gum up the works. Your humidifier is a water-only zone. Oils are for diffusers—let’s not confuse them.
