We all need to breathe, but we have completely opposite tastes in air. Animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. That’s our jam. It’s why we get dizzy in stuffy rooms.
Plants do the exact opposite in the most important way: they inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. It’s like they’re a living, breathing air filter. You and your houseplant are basically a perfect pair—you give each other exactly what you need. It’s the best roommate relationship ever.
Growing Up: One Is Flexible, One Is Firm
Now, imagine your body. You have a skeleton inside you, giving you structure. That’s an endoskeleton. Animals are like living, breathing Jell-O molds with bones hiding inside.
Plants? They have an exoskeleton of sorts. It’s called a cell wall. It’s made of cellulose, and it’s like wearing a little wooden suit. That’s why a sunflower stands tall and you can’t hug a tree to death (please don’t try).
This also means plants are a bit rigid. They can’t just bend over to tie their shoes. Animals can twist, turn, and wiggle. We’re basically contortionists compared to a cactus.
